I. Introduction
Welcome to Mission Hills. So good to have you this us this weekend. We're starting a new series today called Wait, What? I don't know if you've ever been reading along in the Bible and you've got your rhythm going and you're like ''yep, God is powerful, God is good. Faith moves us forward, sin trips us up an...whoa! Wait...what was that?'' Because there's some stuff in the Bible that just catches almost all of us off guard. And that's true whether you've been following Jesus for your whole life or you just said yes to Jesus in the last week. There's stuff in the Bible that we're really surprised to find there...and we're not quite sure what to do with it. I did some social media research this week and asked people to tell me their ''wait, what?'' moments from the Bible. Here's a few examples:
- I'm a new follower of Jesus and I was just reading in Genesis that God made the entire universe in 6 days. Really?
- Genesis 6, says that the sons of God went into the daughters of man and had the Nephilim. Are those angel-human hybrids? What's that all about?
- In 2 Kings, the great prophet Elisha made an axe head float because it would be embarrassing to lose a borrowed axe. How did that make the cut for the Bible?
- Numbers 22: why is there a talking donkey in the Bible?
- There's this short story in 2 Kings about a dead guy getting throne into a tomb and when his body touched the prophet Elisha's bones, he came back to life. The guy, not Elisha. What's up with that?
- On a more serious note: when the Israelites captured Jericho, it says they destroyed every living thing in it, men and women, young and old...was God ok with that?
And we're just scratching the surface here. There are a lot of confusing stories in the Bible...stories that we're not even sure why they're in there, let alone what we're supposed to get out of them.. But the ...
