The story we're going to look at today begins in Joshua 10, but there's an important piece of backstory in Joshua 9 that we need to look at. Here's the condensed version: When God led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and brought them to the promised land, they weren't exactly welcomed with open arms. They had to fight to take possession of the land God had promised them.
By the way, just a little bonus truth: sometimes we have to fight to take possession of God's promises. Just because God has promised something, doesn't mean that taking possession of that promise isn't going to require hard work, faithfulness and trust on our parts. Israel was promised this land, but they had to fight against many enemies to take possession of that promise. And sometimes we have to do the same. God has promised us salvation...but He also says we have to stay faithful to him in order to take possession of it...and we have to do that in spite of the pushback we get from the world because of our faith.
But the fact that we have to fight to take possession of God's promises doesn't mean that we have to fight alone. And one of the things we're going to see today is that God is ready and willing to fight for us if we'll just move forward in faith.
Ok, so here's the scene: Israel is fighting for possession of the promised land and, because of their faithfulness, God has been giving them victory after victory. And there was one city in particular that took notice of that...they could see that Israel's victories weren't natural. And so they hatched a plan.
