Series: Toxic
Craig Smith
Proverbs 30:10
I. Introduction
Welcome to Mission Hills. So good to have you with us this weekend. If you're just joining us, we're in the midst of series on toxic talk. And this is a series that I believe God laid on my heart over a year ago, and at the time, I had no idea we would be in a season where this subject would be so significant. Church, I believe, that we are in a season where toxic talk is causing as much - if not more - damage than Covid-19.
And I get it. It's a perfect storm. Our present circumstances create the perfect breeding ground for toxic talk. And there's so many things we can talk about. We can talk about those reckless people who won't wear masks. We can talk about those fascists who are making us wear masks. We can talk about those churches that won't open because they're filled with fear of man rather than faith in God. We can talk about those churches that have opened and been asked to cease and desist because they aren't using the good sense God gave 'em in how they conduct their services. And don't even get me started on the politicians. By the way, you do know that we're coming up on election season in the United States, don't you? Thank God that people trying to get elected to public office have a long and consistent track record of refusing to engage in toxic talk. So at least we'll have some great examples to look to this fall as we try to keep our own talk from getting toxic.
Somebody said to me the other day, ''When you look at everything that's going on in our country and around the world right now, don't you kind of thing the Devil's working overtime?'' And I said, ''nope, I think he's on a beach in Mexico right now....because I think if you take the pandemic and the politics and the racial tension ...and the way that we're talking to and about and each other because of all that stuff, I think the Devil's probably going 'I can't possibly do anything worse to them than ...
