I. Introduction

Hey, welcome to Mission Hills on this historic occasion where, for the first time in our 78 year history, the whole Mission Hills family is gathering online rather than on-campus. The reason for that, as most of you know, is that we're working to care for our community and cooperate with government requests to limit the spread of this Covid-19 coronavirus. So we've suspended in person gatherings on our physical campuses until we get the all-clear.

But that's all we're doing. We're just suspending in-person, on-campus gatherings. We're not cancelling church. You can't cancel church. Because, as we say all the time here at Mission Hills, the church isn't a building we come to or a program we participate in. It's a mission we choose to be part of. It's the people of God engaged in the mission of God. So wherever you are right now, on the count of three would you just say ''we are the church.'' Ready? One, two, three...we are the church. And we are not cancelled.

It's so important that we don't forget that, especially right now, because this whole Covid-19 thing has created some incredible opportunities for us to be the church and live on mission with Jesus. In fact, I really believe with all of my heart that the coronavirus hasn't created a reason for fear, but a season for mission. And as the church, the people of God engaged in the mission of God, we have to seize the opportunities that are unique to this season. And, while this is always true, it's especially true right now: that's not going to happen through the programs of the church, it's going to happen through people who are the church. That's you, that's me.
