Honesty: Nothing but the Truth (2 of 12)
Series: Character: Mirror Image
James Merritt
1 Samuel 3; 12:1-5

Introduction

1. I want to begin by asking you a personal question. It may offend you so you can keep your answer private. ''Have you told a lie to anyone in the last week?'' Now if you said, ''No,'' you probably just lied. Did you know that the average person tells about thirteen lies per week? A book recently came out with the title, Everybody Lies. The author, a Harvard trained economist with a PhD from Stanford University and a former Google data scientist analyzed new data from the internet - traces of information that billions of people leave on Google, social media and every site you could imagine. They discovered that a lot of what we think is right is dead wrong, because people lie - friends, doctors, family, surveys and even themselves.

2. I read about a man that was standing on a street corner with a dog holding up a sign that said, ''Talking Dog for Sale - $10.'' A man walked by and said, ''Are you serious about that? That dog can't talk.'' Then the dog said, ''Please sir. Please buy me. This man is mean to me. He never takes me for walks, hardly feeds me, keeps me cooped up for days, and I can't stand it anymore.'' He looked at the dog's owner and said, ''That dog really can talk. Why are you selling him for only ten dollars?'' The owner said, ''Because all he does is lie.''

3. Unfortunately, we are living in a world where lying is common, practically expected, and seemingly just the way we do business which is why we are in a series we are calling ''Mirror Image.'' I believe that character is still important and that it still matters. It matters not just morally, ethically, and spiritually, but practically. We began by saying that the foundation of character is integrity. Today, we are going to learn that the first fruit of integrity is honesty. Integrity is more than just honesty, but there can be no integrity without honesty.
