Introduction

1. When I was growing up, one of the most famous comedians in the world was a man named, Groucho Marx. He was hilarious primarily because he used so much self-deprecating humor. He poked fun at himself. One of his most famous quotes was this, ''I don't want to belong to any club that will have me as a member.'' What he was saying was, if the standards of a club are so low that they would accept him as a member, then he didn't think the club was worth joining.

2. There is a club that I have joined more than once to my shame and it is a club that has the lowest standards of any club that you will find. It is a club where the only requirement to join is you have to pretend to be something you are not. The chairman of this club is peer pressure and the one benefit of this club is acceptance. The club's name is hypocrisy. We are in a series of messages on character that we are calling, ''Mirror Image.''

3. Imagine a mirror that would show what you look like, not on the outside, but on the inside. If you looked into that mirror, what character traits would you see or what character traits would you not see? In this series, we have been talking about the various traits that make up the kind of character we all should desire to have which really make up the character of Jesus Christ. Today, we are talking about one that is sorely missing, but people desire everywhere and that is authenticity.

4. When you are authentic, you are the real deal. You aren't one thing in public and another thing in private. You aren't one thing with this group and another thing with that group. To be authentic, you never put politics above people and popularity above principle.
