Perseverance: Run the Stop Sign (7 of 12)
Series: Character: Mirror Image
James Merritt
Job 1: 1-3, 20-22, 2:10
Introduction
1. Have you ever come close to being killed? I have on two occasions and both involved a car. The one I share with you is when I was a student pastor at another church here in Atlanta. I was going to a Christmas party that was being thrown by our volunteers. It was being held at a house that I had never been to and I was driving a road I was unfamiliar with and it was rainy and foggy. I came around a curve and all of a sudden, my eyes widened when I saw a big sign that said, ''stop.'' I slammed on my breaks, but because of the wet road, I skidded right into the path of an oncoming car.
2. As those bright lights got closer and closer, I saw my life flash before me and I literally got broadsided and t-boned right into my passenger door and was knocked into a ditch. Because of the weather, the other car was not driving that fast or surely I would have been killed. Except for being a little sore and banged up, no one was hurt and to this day I am grateful that god spared me.
3. I was not expecting that stop sign when I came around that curve, but I thought about it a lot and I realized that life is so much like that. You round a curve in your life and all of a sudden you will see a sign, but it won't say ''stop''; it will say ''quit!'' you will be broadsided by things you never saw coming and you will be tempted to quit, or you will be discouraged because of something somebody said and you will be tempted to quit, or you will fail where you thought you were going to succeed and you will be tempted to quit, or you just get tired of trying and you will be tempted to quit. We are in a series we are calling ''mirror image.'' it is about character. We have been saying the most important part of all of us is our character. It is not what you look like on the outside that matters; it is who you are on the inside that counts.
