Mark 12: 41-44
Introduction
1. I could not believe it when I read the headline, ''I want the last check I write to bounce.'' I admit my first thought was here is someone who doesn't know how to manage their money, spends every dime that they have, and don't realize there is more to life than spending and getting. When I read about the man who said this, not only was I wrong, but I was ashamed.
2. His name is Charles f. Feeney. He is, or at least he used to be, a billionaire. He made his fortune in the duty-free shopping industry. He made a decision in 1984 which he kept a secret and formed a private foundation called Atlantic philanthropies, and for fifteen years ran it anonymously even though it was one of the largest sources of charitable grants in the united states, Ireland, south Africa, and Vietnam. He secretly turned over the duty-free business to this foundation and continued to invest while giving money away in direct medical care, education, criminal justice advocacy, and peace-building initiates.
3. Atlanta philanthropies will close its doors sometime around 2020 having given away eight billion dollars and would be by far the largest such organization to have voluntarily shut itself down. Mr. Feeney understands that personal prosperity is for the purpose of purposeful generosity.
4. We are in a series that we are calling, ''mirror image.'' it is a series on character. Imagine that you had a mirror you could look at that would show you not what you look like on the outside, but what you would look like on the inside. What would you see in your heart? What kind of character would you have? Today, we are going to talk about one of the traits that probably come the hardest to us, but is one of the evidences that your character is what it ought to be and that is generosity.
