The Filling of the Holy Spirit (2)
Dr. Ernest L. Easley
Ephesians 5:18
We're taking a fresh look at what the Bible describes as The Filling of the Holy Spirit. When it comes to being a Spirit-filled saint, Charles Swindoll is spot on by saying, ''It is one thing to become a Christian. It is another thing entirely to become a Spirit-filled Christian. The tragedy is that so many are converted and so few Spirit-filled.''
As a result, we limp rather than leap! We struggle rather than succeed. We fall short of fulfilling our purpose and becoming what God saved us to become!
Indwelt by the Spirit. YES! Yet, not filled with the Spirit leaves us operating short of full capacity like a flashlight functioning with batteries not fully charged. It can produce a light, but not a bright light. It works, but it doesn't fully work. For a flashlight to function at full capacity, it requires batteries fully charged. Half-charged batteries produce a half-charged light. Whereas fully charged batteries produce a fully charged light.
And what those batteries are to a flashlight, the Holy Spirit is to the Christian. Our light cannot fully shine without the filling of the Holy Spirit any more than a flashlight can fully shine without fully charged batteries.
What do you do when your flashlight isn't functioning at full capacity? Do you open it up and remove half of the batteries and replace them with new ones? Not if you want it to produce the light it was created to produce.
No! You take that flashlight cylinder, open it up and remove all the old batteries and replace them all with new ones. Then you're ready to go! Then your flashlight will operate like it was designed to. In the same way, until you empty out all the sin through repentance and faith, your life cannot be filled with the Holy Spirit. As we saw last time: only what's empty can be filled.
Now you can be indwelt with the Holy Spirit just like a flashlight can contain old, run down batteries, without ...
