I. Introduction
Welcome to Mission Hills. Whether you're joining us in person, online or at a Mission Hills At Home Watch Party, I'm so glad you're with us today for the beginning of a new series called Chasing Peace.
And with everything this year has thrown at us, peace probably feels like it's in pretty short supply in your life, right now. Whether it's the virus itself or the economy or our personal health or trying to figure out how to homeschool and do your job or whatever...our circumstances aren't exactly peace-producing, are they?
But here's the thing: peace is never a product of our circumstances, because no matter how good our circumstances might be at any given moment, the reality is that our circumstances can change at any given moment. So peace can never be a product of our circumstances. Instead, peace is a by-product of what we pursue. It's a by-product of what we have our eyes fixed on and what we're doing everything we can to move towards.
The problem is that, so often, what we're pursuing really boils down to nothing more than a change in our circumstances. We pursue money or a career or a promotion or a possession or a relationship or a family or a degree or whatever...and there's nothing wrong with any of those things. But they cannot produce peace in your life. In fact, there's a very good chance they'll produce more stress! Anyone who's ever thought, If I could just find a husband or a wife, then I'd finally have peace in my life, has no idea what marriage is like. Marriage is good. It's great...but it is not an automatic producer of peace. No circumstance is.
So what can we pursue that will produce peace as a by-product. And the answer is: godly character. When what we pursue is being the kind of people God designed us to be regardless of our circumstances, we suddenly find that peace is possible regardless of our circumstances. And that's what thi ...
