2 John

I want to welcome you back to week 3 of the message series we're calling ''Cliff Notes'' -(a study of the 1-chapter books of the Bible).

In week one we unpacked Obadiah, and we saw how (The pride of the Edomites led to the destruction of the Edomites). God's word says in Prov. 16:18, ''Pride comes before destruction.'' That was true for the people of Edom and it's true for us today....

Last week we studied the book of Philemon. Philemon is an epistle... which simply means that this book of the Bible was originally written as a letter. So when you read Philemon, you're reading someone's mail.

There are 21 epistles in the New Testament. Some were written to churches and others were written to individuals in the church.

Paul wrote 13 of the 21 epistles, including the book of Philemon, which was a letter about a runaway slave named Onesimus that found out you don't experience freedom by running away from your problems.

Freedom is only found in Jesus Christ! Last week we saw that Jesus is the one that changes the status of a sinner... He's the only one that can pay our debt and give us access to the Father.

This morning, we're going to be looking at another Epistle; this letter was written by John. In fact, the name of the book is 2 John.

Fun Facts:
- He wrote this letter around the year A.D. 90.
- It's the shortest book in the New Testament (only 13 verses).
- It's the only book of the Bible that's addressed to a woman.
(v. 1-3) 1 The elder: To the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth-and not only I, but also all who know the truth-2 because of the truth that remains in us and will be with us forever. 3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
We know that John is writing this letter, but the question is who is he writing it to? Who is the ''elect lady'' or as the NIV puts i ...
