We're looking at the story of Job on Sunday mornings. Today, we come to chapters 8-14. I'm preaching on the subject, With Friends Like These. You've heard the phrase before, ''with friends like these, who needs enemies?'' Well, instead of helping him in his time of need, Job's friends had added to his pain and suffering. In chapter 8, Bildad speaks: READ 8:1-7; Job responds: READ 9:1-4; 10:1-2 Then Zophar speaks: READ 11:1-6; Job replies once more: READ 13:15; 14:1-2
*A British publication once offered a prize for the best definition of a friend. Among the thousands of answers received were the following: ''One who understands our silence.'' ''A volume of sympathy bound in cloth.'' ''A watch that beats true for all time and never runs down.'' The winning definition read: ''A friend is the one who comes in when the whole world has gone out.''*
Well, Job's friends had walked in after his world had fallen apart. But instead of coming to his aid they simply added to his pain. I think they meant well, they just didn't do a good job helping Job get well.
*A husband knew his wife's birthday was fast approaching so he asked her ''if you could have anything in the world for one day, what would you want?'' She replied with a smile, ''Well, I'd really love to be six again.'' On the morning of her birthday, he woke the love of his life up early, told her to get ready and off they went to the nearest IHOP for a stack of delicious pancakes smothered with fruit and whipped cream and a large glass of chocolate milk. Next, they loaded up and went to a local theme park. What a day! He put her one very ride in the park from the largest roller coaster to the smallest kids ride. After a long morning at the theme park she staggered out of the park exit...head swimming and stomach churning. After they left the theme park it was off to McDonald's where he ordered her two Big Macs, large ...
