Intro/Attention
We're studying the Old Testament book of Job on Sunday mornings. We have seen a faithful and righteous who experienced great suffering, yet somehow was able to keep hope alive. I've entitled this series, Pieces: the story of Job, because even Job says that his suffering had shattered his life and broken him into a million pieces. He says to his friends at the beginning of chapter 19, ''How long will you torment me and break me in pieces with words?'' (ON SCREEN)
Today, from Job 19:23-17, I want to zoom in on one of the most powerful scenes in this entire book. In the midst of despair, heartache, and suffering, Job exclaims, My Redeemer Lives! In other words, even though everything around him pointed in the other direction, Job chose to have hope and continued to trust in God. READ TEXT
How do you respond to suffering and pain? The way you react to things you don't like says a lot about you we are. Maybe you take the advice of Job's wife and ''curse God'' because of the suffering He has allowed you to experience. Maybe you turn to your friends and loved ones but feel like they don't have the answers you're looking for; they simply don't understand. Maybe you feel abandoned, forsaken, hurt, and frustrated.
Maybe you've gone through all of those emotions and had all of those reactions. It seems like Job experienced a range of emotions as well. There were moments he just didn't understand. Moments when he was heartbroken and sad. Moments when he was angry and frustrated. But also moments where he was strong and full of faith. We see one of those moments here. Job says, ''My Redeemer lives!''
The word ''redeemer'' provides several pictures for us. In some places the word means ''kinsman'' or nearest relative. We see this played out in the book of Ruth. No family member is closer to us than the Lord Jesus Christ. At this point Job did not have a family, but he had ...
