Series: Job

Job 32-37

Intro/Attention

Well, I told you that we were finished hearing from Job's three friends, but I may have left out some important information when I did that. I don't think I lied to you when I said we won't hear from them again, but I may or may not have said that another one of Job's friends shows up. I'm pretty sure I told you this guy ''Elihu'' was coming. Don't worry, he's not quite as bad as the other guys. He has some good points but He also has some bad points.

Scholars really can't agree on what ''Elihu'' does here. Some treat him like an interruption in the story and see no significance in his words. Others feel like the book was building to this moment and he brings wisdom that was lacking in the other three friends.

Elihu gave a long speech-six chapters in our Bible-in which he explained the character of God and applied this truth to Job's situation. He gives a big introduction in chapter 32 and then dives into his speech in chapters 33-37. Elihu was not trying to prove that Job was a sinner, but that Job's view of God was wrong. Elihu introduced a new truth into the debate: that God sends suffering, not necessarily to punish us for our sins, but to keep us from sinning and to make us better people (36:1-15).

Here's an important point that ''Elihu'' makes, ''Job, your view of God is wrong. Your God is too small. The God of the Bible is much greater than you could ever imagine.'' Listen to how he begins his speech: READ 32:6-10 And listen to how he concludes his speech: READ 37:14-24

He graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary back in the days when its theology was still solidly evangelical and conservative. A couple of years after his graduation, he was invited back to preach for the chapel service at Princeton Seminary. The day fina ...
