Are You the One?
Richard Bradley
Matthew 11:1-6

John the Baptist sent two of his disciples to ask Jesus a very important question - in fact - I believe life's most important question; ''Are you the one?'' What did this question mean? Obviously he was referring to God's promise of a Messiah. False messiahs had arisen before and had proven to be big disappointments to this man of God. This time he needed to be sure. No doubt he felt like Jesus was the promised one but he needed to hear it from the Lord Himself.

If Jesus did prove to be the promised one this knowledge would literally turn John's world upside down and man did he need to hear some good news. John was in prison awaiting an almost certain date with his executioner. Some have criticized John's question thinking it to be a lack of faith but put yourself in his position. John needed to know that his life's work had not been in vain and that the most significant event in the long history of human affairs had finally taken place.

Matthew 11:1-6

1 Now it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples, that He departed from there to teach and to preach in their cities. 2 And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples 3 and said to Him, ''Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?'' 4 Jesus answered and said to them, ''Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: 5 The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. 6 And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.''

Indeed, Jesus was the one - is the one. Notice how we can know that and what this knowledge means to us.
