The Man Who Came to Jesus in the Night
Rex Yancey
John 3:1-7
One of the saddest stories I have ever read is about the legendary Country and Western singer, Hank Williams. In 1948, the year I was born, he wrote the familiar song entitled I Saw the Light. His mother says they were on the way back home in Alabama when Hank saw the beacon light at the airport and said, ''I know we are close to home because I saw the light.''
Hank Williams sang in the honkiest of honkytonks. His rhythm came from his early church background. He was tormented by disease, drugs, and alcohol.
One night he was to appear in two performances. He was so drunk after the first performance that Minnie Pearl and the show's promoter drove him around to try and sober him up before the second performance. Minnie started singing ''I wandered so aimless, life filled with sin; I wouldn't let my Dear Savior in. Then Jesus came like a stranger in the night; Praise the Lord, I saw the light.'' Hank said Minnie, ''I don't see light. There ain't no light.'' He died in the back of that Cadillac somewhere in West Virginia, on January 31, 1952 at the age of 29.
The Bible tells us that those who are lost live in darkness. But Jesus came to this earth so those in darkness might be brought into the light.
-John 12:46, ''I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.'' In Ephesians 5:8 Paul said, ''For you were sometimes in darkness, but now are you light in the Lord.''
-Nicodemus was a man who walked in darkness. It was a religious darkness. But there was that hour when his darkness turned into light. You might say he was a man who found light in the night.
Nicodemus is found in the gospel of John three times. He was a member of the Sanhedrin and was counted as one of the three richest men in Jerusalem.
As we continue getting acquainted with people in the NT, let us look at these three occasions.
