Where There is Fire -- There Is Smoke
Dr. David Davis
Psalm 119:83
Psalm 119:83 - ''For I am become like a bottle in the smoke...''
The bottle that David was talking about was not a glass bottle, but was made out of leather and hung on the wall or from the top of a hut or tent. They would build a fire in their house, but they didn't have a chimney so the smoke would go out of an open door, window, or wherever it could escape. As long as there was a fire - there was smoke. The more the smoke, the blacker the leather bottle would turn.
David was writing this passage, probably in reflection of his life. He was thinking of how his life had become blackened with smoke. He was like that bottle in the smoke.
I believe he probably was thinking of the time he lusted after Bathsheba, sinned with her, and the smoke that followed his sin. He thought of his daughter Tamar who was raped by her brother Amnon; Amnon killed by his brother Absalom; Absalom killed by David's army.
Remember: David said, ''That man shall repay four-fold...'' in response to the story he received from Nathan, the court reverend. ''David, thou art the man...'' But David, being a ''man after God's own heart'' didn't fire the court preacher, but repented.
We have all been like that bottle in the smoke. We could all recount dark moments in our life that we can look back on. Most of us have been in the smoke but remember: Where There Is Fire -- There is Smoke. Thank God for the fire!
There are churches across our nation that have always been associated with GODLINESS, GREATNESS, AND GROWTH. On the most part, they have not looked to others to set the pace, but they have been the pacesetters. Many are likened to the church in Rome when Paul said in Romans 1:8, ·''I thank my God through Jesus Christ ·for you all,· that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.''
