Ephesians 6:10-17

Introduction:
"Take the helmet of salvation ..."

"Keep your head about you!"
"Don't lose your head!"
The head is one of the most important organs of the body!
It is the decision center, command center, observation center, balance center, thought center, etc.
When you lose your head you are dead!

No recovery!
First thing David did after he knocked Goliath down was to cut off his head!

Notice that this a defensive piece of clothing.
It only protects!
The helmet protected against a head shot, which was fatal.

I put on the helmet of salvation to protect the mind.

The helmet of salvation is spoken of three times in scripture

Ephesians 6:17 Our Text

Isa 59:17 Speaking of Christ at His second coming!
17 He put on righteousness as his breastplate, and the helmet of salvation on his head; he put on the garments of vengeance and wrapped himself in zeal as in a cloak.

1 Thessalonians 5:8 defines what the Helmet is!


I. What is the Helmet of Salvation-Hope

1Thes 5:8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. (NIV)

Here, Paul calls it salvation; but in 1 Thes 5:8, it is the helmet of the HOPE of salvation. That gives us an insight into how the helmet pictures salvation.
Hope and faith are tied together!

Heb 11:1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. (NIV)

Salvation is faith exercised in hope!

Rom 8:24-25
24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has?
25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. (NIV)

Source of our hope is God's Word!
Ps 119:81
81 My soul faints with longing for your salvation, but I have put my hope in your word. (NIV)
