Building the Body: The Call to Discipline

Ephesians 4:11-15
Introduction:
Receiving Christ is the first step of Salvation! That is the easy step! Discipleship is the second step it requires discipline!
Body building takes commitment as I shared last message! It also takes exercise! There has to be a commitment to routines that will develop your body!
That is the same spiritually!
The commitment to Grow!
15 ". . .grow up in all things into Him who is the head--Christ. (NKJ)
Everything that is healthy is growing!
Plants Grow
People grow
God wants His people to grow! The call of God's word is Spiritual Maturity! Discipline is necessary to have spiritual maturity! What is spiritual Maturity?
Spiritual maturity is becoming like Christ!
13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;
I. The Nature of Spiritual Maturity!
We need though to understand some facts about Spiritual Maturity!
A. It is not Automatic!
Heb 5:12-13
12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you. . .and you have come to need milk . . .13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. (NKJ)
The ability to grow is automatic but it does not grow on its own!
Illus. Of the plant! The power of Growth is in the seed but it requires certain other elements such as soil, water and sunlight to release that power of growth.
B. There are no shortcuts! It is a process.
2 Pet 3:18
18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. . . (KJV)
It just takes time! Be not weary in well doing for in due season you shall reap if you faint not"
C. It takes discipline!
1 Tim 4:7
". . . train yourself to be godly."(NIV)
