Be Responsible
David Cawston
Exodus 20:7

Introduction:
1. Keep God First
2. Guard your heart.
3. Be Responsible

Sunday School song.
''Be careful little eyes what you see,
Be careful little ears what you hear,
Be careful little mouth what you say. . .''

We are totally responsible for what we say.

Matt 5:33-37
33 ''Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.'
34 ''But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God's throne;
35 ''nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
36 ''Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black.
37 ''But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' For whatever is more than these is from the evil one. (NKJ)

Comment on v. 33.
This was said to them of old time, and is the true intent and meaning of the third commandment. Thou shalt not use, or take up, the name of God (as we do by an oath) in vain, or unto vanity, or a lie. (from Matthew Henry's Commentary)

How do we take God's name in vain?
[1.] By hypocrisy, making a profession of God's name, but not living up to that profession. Still living in sin. It makes a mockery of their worship, their religion and their God.
[2.] By covenant-breaking; if we make promises to God, yet perform not to the Lord our vows, we take his name in vain
[3.] By rash swearing, mentioning the name of God, or any of his attributes, in the form of an oath, without any just occasion for it.
[4.] By false swearing, they affronted him, instead of doing him honour, if they called him to be witness to a lie.
[5.] By using the name of God lightly and carelessly, and without any regard to its awful significancy. (from Matthew Henry's Commentary)

All of these things are unnecessary and totally irresponsible.

We are totally responsible for what we say. Be Responsible for what you Say!
