Adoption is a wonderful act. It is also at the center of God's heart and the gospel of Jesus Christ.
When we become spiritually adopted by God our Father through our personal relationship with Christ, we receive all of the privileges, promises and future blessings as an heir within the family of God.
Adoption in the earthly, human realm is similar. A vital part of youth ministry is the privilege of hearing wonderful stories from adopted teenagers as well as the testimonies of others who struggle through the realities of adoption. By unpacking the motives and loving commitments made in most adoption experiences we come to discover at least three wonders of adoption:
Adoption is a CHOICE OF SOMEONE'S WILL. The adopter is typically under no obligation to adopt but instead exercises his/her will to parent another to whom he/she has no natural relation.
Adoption is an ACT OF LOVE. The adopter demonstrates self-sacrifice to the one in need, although that one may not realize his/her need at the time.
Adoption is an EVIDENCE OF GRACE. The adopter's gracious initiative goes out to one who has not been able to earn or merit the care and love he/she receives.
God's adoption of His children models love and commitment on the eternal level. We also see these wonders of adoption in our family relationships. Yet in our day, God is calling many Christians to adopt someone without Christ in the spiritual realm. In recent years, the Christian world is partnering efforts globally to see every UN-reached People Group adopted for Christ. So too, in our country, students and youth workers are working together to see every school ...
