Introduction: The June 3rd edition of The Tennesseean carried a paid advertisement called The Graham-Shelly Crusade. It was indeed an attack add that was directed towards one of my dearest friends, Rubel Shelly (as well as Dr. Graham). It castigates Rubel and members of his church for their participation in a gathering where the counseling materials used; "say nothing about obedience in baptism being necessary for salvation." "What is involved is the very gospel plan of salvation itself. This is the ultimate salvation issue!"

[I should be quick to tell you that the following day a lady came forward at the conclusion of the service to express her faith in Christ. When Rubel asked her about her connection to the church, she said she simply had read the add and decided to come and check out the church for herself.]

Someone has said that "in the beginning God created man in His own image. The competition began when man insisted on returning the compliment." People have created every false conception of God imaginable. Not only have they worked to make their deities palatable to the human mind, but they have set up their intellects-and therefore themselves-as gods. (Swindoll, p.25)

Today in our series on Growing Pains we are going to go back to the fundamentals of the message of the gospel. Let's look at it together in Paul's letter to the Corinthians.


TWO KINDS OF PEOPLE IN THE WORLD

1 Corinthians 1:18 (NIV)
18For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
