WELCOME
1. Good morning. Would you open your Bibles to John 16, verses 7 and 8.

2. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.
John 16:7-8

PRAY

WHAT IS SIN
1. Who here loves it when we feel convicted by sin? Not too many. We don’t love it, do we? We don’t enjoy it, do we? Well by the end of this sermon, it is my hope that all of us will feel a sense of joy, assurance, and even thankfulness the next time we feel convicted of sin.

2. Sin. What is sin? 1 John 3:4 tells us that “Sin is lawlessness.” J.C. Ryle tells us in his book Holiness, “The slightest outward or inward departure from absolute mathematical parallelism with God’s revealed will and character constitutes a sin, and at once makes us guilty in God’s sight.” Sin can be something we commit. Sin can be something we omit. It is not enough to look at our outward actions and words to determine someone’s righteousness. Sin comes from within.

3. Jesus tells us in the sermon on the mount in Matthew 5:21-22, “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment.” And then again in verses 27 and 28, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
