Introduction

Just looking at this I don't expect you to recognize where it is or what it is, but it is actually one of my favorite places in the world to go. Every time I go there I preach there. It is the valley of Leah. It may still not ring a bell with you, but maybe this will.

2. It is the scene of the most famous battle that is described in the old testament. What makes it so interesting is it was not fought between two armies, but fought between two people. Even people who don't know anything about the bible or read the bible, know about these people in this battle, because it was fought between David and goliath.

3. Now, I know it is a very important story and it is one that the author wanted to make sure we would never forget. I know that because of the space given to it for one thing. It consists of 58 verses. It is one of the longest chapters of the bible. It uses 912 Hebrew words. It is one of the most detailed descriptions of any battle you will find anywhere in the bible. We are told about the historical location and the military weapons. We are even told about the size of one of the combatants. The author of this story wanted to make sure this story would stick to our soul. [turn to I Samuel 17]

4. We are in a series on the greatest king who ever lived. His name was David. He is the most honored king in Israel and has his own tomb. The sign of the nation of Israel is the star of David. In this series, we are going to be learning tremendous life-lessons from this king.

5. This is kind of like the Christmas story. It is one you don't have to really go over much, because everybody knows it. Whether you are a kid or an adult you never really get tired of it. It has Hollywood written all over it. ...
