Introduction

1. It is one of the great honors that god has so graciously given to me. It is one that I didn't expect and is worth a thousand words and here is the picture. [show photo- George h. W. Bush] this is a picture of me and two of my sons, James and Jonathan, standing next to the former president, George h. W. Bush. We had been invited to a lunch in downtown Atlanta where he was campaigning for someone running for governor and to this day, I don't know exactly how, but I got invited along with my two sons, to sit at the table with president bush.

2. As you can imagine, normally those seats are reserved for big donors, mega-givers, people with vast political influence and connections. I didn't have any of those. There was absolutely nothing I could give to president bush or anyone else in return for the honor and privilege of having a seat at that table. I had done nothing to earn it, didn't deserve it, didn't even ask for it. I would say I was there simply because of grace, which brings us to perhaps the most beautiful illustration of grace, in the old testament, and one of the most beautiful in all of the bible. [turn to ii Samuel 9] we are in a series on the life of a king named David, and we are stepping back into a time tunnel of 3000 years, when David was the most powerful man ruling over the most powerful nation on earth.

3. If you remember this story, he was at the very zenith and apex of his life. Through his leadership, Israel had grown to ten times its original size and had never known a political or a military defeat. The economy was running on all eight cylinders. There was not only was a chicken in every pot and a chariot in ever garage, but there were grapes on every vine. Peace and prosperity flowed through Israel like water in a river.
