Lying' Eyes (7 of 9)
Series:
James Merritt
2 Samuel 11
Welcome to those watching online and to those at our campuses.
Introduction
1. If you had your life to do all over again and you could do just one thing differently, what would it be? I can all but guarantee you it wouldn't be something that you did good that you wish you could have done better. It would be something that you did bad that you wish you had never done at all. We are in a series on David that we have subtitled: life lessons from a king. There is no question that if David could have done his life all over again, there is one thing he would have done completely differently. In fact, I can sum it up in one word - Bathsheba.
2. When you think about David and you know his story, two other names always come to mind, goliath and Bathsheba. Goliath reminds us of David's greatest victory. Bathsheba reminds of David's greatest defeat. Goliath was perhaps the highlight of his life. Bathsheba was definitely the low-light of his life.
3. No single sin outside the sin that Adam and eve committed in the garden of Eden, has received more press coverage than David with Bathsheba. It has been repeated time and time again right up to the very present day. It is called different things, ''a one-night stand,'' ''an affair,'' ''a one-nighter,'' ''a hook-up.'' in other words, it is all about Hollywood's favorite topic - sex.
4. It is a story that has it all - sex, murder, intrigue, cover-up, a king has a one-night fling with another man's wife, gets her pregnant and then has the other man murdered to cover it up. Today, everything from the new York times, to twitter, to Facebook, to the internet is lit up with the headline, ''king's spring fling uncovered.''
5. [turn to ii Samuel 11]. What is amazing is you would never have expected this chapter to be in the bible. At least, not about David. When you read the first ten chapters of ii Samuel, David has batted a thousand. He is at the top of hi ...
