James Merritt
2 Samuel 12
Welcome to those watching online and to those at our campuses.
Introduction
1. In 2015, there was a website called ''Ashley Madison.'' they advertised themselves as ''the most recognized and reputable married dating company.'' their website facilitated adulterous flings for married people. Thirty-seven million people became their clients, because of the promise of anonymity and the ability to browse thousands of willing adulterers. At the time of the hack, only three zip codes in the entire united states did not have an Ashley Madison account.
2. These people signed up believing that no one would ever know and no one would ever get hurt, but they got jacked when they got hacked. What they did in the dark was exposed to the light. The tragedy is we will never know how much hurt, heartache, destroyed marriages, broken homes and devastated children got left behind.
3. Three thousand years ago, in one of the most famous stories ever told we learn about a king named David who fell into the same trap with the same result. We have been in a series on David and by anyone's account what a fascinating life he lived. He knew the mountaintop of victory and the valley of defeat. We are going to learn today he was not only a man after god's own heart, but he also broke god's heart. [turn to ii Samuel 12]
4. A year has passed since we read what happened with David in ii Samuel 11. To refresh your memory, David was on the roof of this palace on an extended vacation while his army was out in the battle-field fighting. From the rooftop, he looked down and saw a beautiful woman bathing, named Bathsheba. Even though he was warned she was someone else's wife, he brought her to the palace, had sex with her and sent her home thinking it was one of those harmless ''no one will know and nobody will get hurt'' flings. Then three words changed everything, ''I am pregnant.''
