Introduction
1. It happens at different times, in different ways, to different people. It has happened to many of us, but not to all of us. It generally happens later in life like for me it happened on a December morning two decades ago at 3 o'clock in the morning. My phone rang and it was my oldest brother who called and the first three words out of his mouth were ''dad is gone.'' I joined the ranks of those who lost one of the two people who brought me into this world, but with that realization came the thought that finally hit me for the first time like cold water in my face, ''I, too, am going to die.'' we all know it, but there comes a moment when you really face up to it, grab hold of it, and it grabs hold of you.
2. As the runway of life begins to run out and you realize your life is going to end, this question begins to pop up increasingly. ''What am I going to leave behind?''
3. Normally, when you begin to think about that you think in terms of possessions, that is what stuff do you have that you are going to leave to other people and how are you going to divide it up? And you think about, inheritance, but those are not the two most important things we leave behind. You also are going to leave behind, people, people that you knew, people that you loved, people that you work with, people that you did business with, but you are also going to leave behind the influence. The important thing to remember is this. It is not the possessions and the inheritance that you leave behind that count. Those won't last forever. I was amazed to learn that seventy percent of wealthy families lose their wealth by the second generation and ninety percent by the third generation.
