Intro:
We continue our series in Genesis today on Trusting God's Story. Andrew has told us already that God has invited us into His story. Today I want to remind us that this story is God's story not our story and yet because God has included us in His story we will be forever blessed.
Let's read Genesis 2:4-25
v4 Who made the heavens?
v7 Who formed man from the dust?
v8 Who planted a garden?
v9 Who made the plants and trees?
v15 Who put the man in the garden?
v16 Who commanded the man?
v18 Who said it is not good for man to be alone?
v22 Who made the woman?
1. God decides what happens in the story and who is in the story.
After all it is His story. But we struggle with this because:
We want to write our own story.
We don't like the character or the part we play in God's story
We simply don't believe their is a true story and we want to be completely autonomous and distance ourselves from God.
We may say that God's story is about us because the Bible spends most of the story explaining God's relationship with us. But it is really about Him. It is a faulty way to read your Bible and just look for yourself in the story and how it benefits you.
Illustration. Like when someone takes a group picture that you are in. What is the first thing you look for in the picture? YOURSELF. But the picture is not about you, it's about the group. There is a bigger story in that picture than just you.
The story is about how God relatates to us and will ultimately redeem us to Himself
God's central character is Jesus, we just think we are the central character.
You might say: ''But I do have my own story! I have my own life to live!''
Answer: Yes, but it is still within God's story and he is still coordinating and providentially guiding your story.
And there is another aspect that has been introduced here in Genesis 1-2 and that is God is not ...
