Ecclesiastes 2:17-26

In 1982, Larry Walters decided to fly. You might find it interesting that he did not possess a pilot's License. Nor did he own a plane. But, he'd always dreamed of flying and he came up with a unique plan.

Walters purchased forty-five weather balloons at the local Army-Navy surplus store, and two tanks of helium. The balloons were then tied to his lawn chair at his girlfriend's house in San Pedro, CA. The lawn chair was anchored to the bumper of a friends' car by two pylon tethers.

Walters eventually leveled off and two pilots (TWA and Delta) reported passing a lawn chair at sixteen thousand feet! If you go to www.markbarry.com you can listen to an 18:25 recording from REACT - a CB monitoring organization. Savoy replies, ''What color is your balloon?'' Walters voice raises an octave as he shouts, ''It's not a balloon, sir. It's forty-five balloons - check that - there's only thirty-five balloons left and they're beige.''

Two hours, three miles, and sixteen-thousand feet later Walters crashed his aircraft in a Long Beach backyard. Some of the balloons draped over power lines and cut off power in Long Beach for twenty minutes. The FAA fined him $1,500 and cited him for four violations.

Walters appeared on The Tonight Show and flew to New York (in a plane) to be on Late Night With ...
