Ephesians 4:26, 30-32
CIT - Paul commands the Ephesian Christians to put off unrighteous anger.
INTRODUCTION:
Illus: My last singing Christmas Tree performance. On the second night I allowed all the backup singers to do their thing. This was fine with everyone but the husband of our principal soprano soloist. She had the best seat in the house. She sat right at the very top of the tree and sang several solos from there. Her husband had always been a good friend of mine, but he was ticked. I found out about it after the performance and gave the guy a call, thinking I could settle all this quickly and go home. I didn't expect what I got when I called. He was past angry, he was furious. Nothing I said had any effect on him, he wouldn't listen to reason, and what was worse, was he had his wife on the other line who crying and begging him to stop. His final solution was to invite me over to his house to meet him in the driveway and settle this like men. Needless to say, the brother had some anger management problems. (And no - I didn't go to his house to settle things like men!
Frankly, this guy was, and is, a great guy. He asked forgiveness and our friendship became stronger than ever. But a lot of men and women in church are just like him. They really are good people, but they can't control their temper. They blow their tops, and when they do they ruin their witness and hurt the good name of the church.
The Bible has a lot to say about anger.
Proverbs 14: 29 He who is slow to wrath has great understanding, but he who is impulsive exalts folly.
Proverbs 19:11 The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, and his glory is to overlook a transgression.
Ecc. 7: 9 Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools.
Jesus preached against unrighteous anger in Matt. 5:22
James 1:19 instructs us to be slow to wrath.
