A. When we moved to Cville Target was my favorite store!
1. Then, Target closed and I went into a period of mourning!
2. Somebody organized a petition ... rumors circulated that they'd reopen - but they never did.
B. One day a huge American flag began flying over Target:
1. It became storage space (they'll never fill it - they did).
2. Tore up the parking lot ... put in driveways ... and they built storage units (filling up fast).
3. We are a nation of STUFF!
C. According to the Gale Book of Averages, every home has ...
1. 4.2 TV sets - and 5.6 radios ...
2. 3.4 vehicles - and 7.6 phones ...
3. 142 catalogs - and 9.6 credit cards!
4. We like our toys, don't we?
D. But Xian's are supposed to live in contrast to our culture:
Rom. 12:2 (LB), ''Don't copy the behavior and cus- toms of this world; be a new and different person w/a fresh newness in all you do and think. Then you will learn from your own experience how His ways will really satisfy.''
E. Our world believes the false premise that stuff satisfies:
1. There's nothing wrong w/having money/things.
2. But there is something wrong when money becomes a narcotic that we depend on for the next emotional high.
F. I hope that as we examine Solomon's quest for fulfillment w/the narcotic of wealth ...
1. That you'll learn from his failure and deal w/your demons.
2. And, I hope you'll quit competing w/the world and begin focusing on true riches.
G. Might be thinking, ''I really don't have that much stuff.''
1. But - you can be guilty of hoarding.
2. You can be envious ... greedy ... and resentful.
3. You spend money you don't have -- to buy things you don't need -- to impress people you don't like!
H. More than 1 million Americans file for bankruptcy every year:
1. 58% who divorce blame money as their problem.
