The Wisdom of Ignorance
Richard Bradley
1 Corinthians 3:18-23
In our 21st century world we often use the words stupid and ignorant as if they meant the same thing. They don't! Stupid means that someone is incapable of learning. Ignorant assumes that someone is capable of learning but so far hasn't. The ignorant person is simply an ill-informed person. Of course someone can be ignorant for all sorts of reasons. Ignorance can come from a lack of experience or it can be willful. There are some who don't know and don't want to know.
The problem is that there are too many in our world today that think they know when they don't. While ignorance is not necessarily a good thing, taking the position that you know something that you don't is even worse. The truly wise person is someone that knows they don't know!
1 Corinthians 3:18-23
18 Stop deceiving yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world's standards, you need to become a fool to be truly wise.
19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say,
''He traps the wise
in the snare of their own cleverness.''
20 And again,
''The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise;
he knows they are worthless.''
21 So don't boast about following a particular human leader. For everything belongs to you-
22 whether Paul or Apollos or Peter, or the world, or life and death, or the present and the future. Everything belongs to you,
23 and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.
Look at what Paul wrote about the wisdom of ignorance.
THE TRULY WISE ADMIT IGNORANCE
18 Stop deceiving yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world's standards,
you need to become a fool
to be truly wise.
According to Paul, believing we can solve our problems and the problems of those around us utilizing only the wisdom of this world will get us and them in a world of hurt. Things are tough enough in this world without us making things worse because we won't admit we don't ...
