There was a story about how a mean man who got saved in a revival meeting. He was loving to his wife and spent time with his children. His neighbors learned to trust him. However, his dog would go to sleep with one eye open. He was afraid his master would backslide!

A backslider can be described as a man, woman, boy or girl who trusted Christ as their Savior. But sometime in their lives they became faithless and untrue to Christ and his Word. They become cold and worldly at heart.

Jesus said to the Church at Ephesus, ''You have left your first love. That which was to be first became second and that which was second became first. It is the major reason we need revival in our churches today.

Only a true born-again person can backslide. A lost person has nothing to slide back from even if they are church members.

The side effects of being backslidden is a confused life. It brings on the discipline of the Lord. It causes pastors to have heartache and grieves the Holy Spirit. Backsliding shames the cross of Christ. -

Backsliding is a real possibility in all of our lives.

1.THE FACT OF BACKSLIDING

A. Saints in the past have backslidden.

Saul and David both backslid on the Lord. In the NT Simeon Peter backslid. ''When you are converted, strengthen the brethren.''

B. There are sinful inclinations in all of us.

We are all vulnerable to temptation. We have a natural bent toward sinning. We have a formidable

Foe in the Devil. Although we are saved, we still have the flesh to deal with every day.

C. We must be constantly on guard and examine ourselves.

''Let him who thinketh he stands take heed lest he fall.'' We get too cocky, too sure of ourselves, and before we know it we grow cold.

We live in a world that is not Christian friendly. The pull is always downward. We must be aware and prepare for temptation.
