We're taking this winter to walk through the most famous sermon Jesus ever preached. It's known as the Sermon on the Mount, because he was sitting on a mountainside when he gave it. And we've been saying that this is a sermon that's all about a King and his kingdom. Jesus said, ''The kingdom of heaven is near.'' And he wasn't just talking about something we hope to get into after we die. He's saying there is this kingdom that's available now. It's within reach. You can't see it or hear it or touch it, but just like a WiFi signal, it's really there. And when you connect to this kingdom, which you can only do by trusting and following king Jesus, there's a whole new realm of life that opens up to you. So the Sermon on the Mount gives us a vision of what our lives could look like as we walk in God's kingdom, following Jesus as our King.

Now: let's try to put ourselves in the shoes of the original listeners. They were hearing Jesus invite them to this new kind of life. But all of their lives, they had heard a different invitation. From a young age, they had heard their parents, calling them to live by the commands of God. They had heard rabbis, telling them to revere and honor the Scriptures. So even though many of these people probably couldn't read, they could recite Scriptures; they could probably sing many of the Psalms. They could reel off the Ten Commandments, no problem. In other words, these were people who, all their lives, were told, ''Life is all about cherishing and following the Hebrew Scriptures.''

So as they're listening to Jesus, and being captivated by this vision of life that he's presenting, a question starts to form in their minds: ''How does this relate to that? To everything we've been taught? Is Jesus tossing that out? The Ten Commandments told me not to lie or cheat on my spouse or kill people. Is Jesus saying we can forget about th ...
