Matthew 5:27-32
Good morning. Do you realize that in just a few short months, the 2020 Presidential campaign season will be in full swing? Get excited now. So we're going to start to see TV ads, and social media ads, and debates, where the candidates will say, ''Here is the vision of life you can have if you elect me-if you make me your leader.'' I haven't even seen one of those ads yet, and I'm already tired of them. But here's my point: in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is basically delivering his campaign speech. He's saying, ''Here's the vision of life I'm offering you. If you make me your king, you will find yourself walking in this different kingdom. It transcends Republicans and Democrats; in fact, it transcends any earthly borders; it's the ultimate kingdom, and it's the only kingdom that will still be standing when every other kingdom is gone.'' So this is a vision of life lived in the kingdom of God.
Toward the beginning of the sermon, Jesus says, ''Look: walking in my kingdom does not mean you toss out the Hebrew Scriptures. I didn't come to abolish the Law and the Prophets; I came to fulfill them.'' And one of the ways he fulfills them is to tell us the true meaning of the commandments. So last week I mentioned that Jesus takes six examples-six Old Testament commands, and he says, ''You've heard that it was said...but I tell you.'' And he's not changing what God said; he explaining what God had in mind in the first place. So this week we're going to look at the second and third examples, which both have to do with marriage.
Now: some of you are married, and this will apply directly to you. Some of you will be married, and it will apply to you. But even if you're divorced or widowed or you never get married, this affects all of us in some way, as you will see when we get into it.
So...let's read the passage-Matthew chapter five, beginning in verse ...
