Radical Love (6 of 11)
Series: Kingdom Come: Sermon on the Mount

Matthew 5:38-48
Good morning. We're taking this winter to walk through the first official sermon, that Jesus ever gave, the Sermon on the Mount. Most, or all, of his listeners were Jewish people, who had a very high view of the Hebrew Scriptures. So, very early in the sermon, Jesus clarifies something for them. He says, ''I did not come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I came to fulfill them.'' In other words, ''Hold on to your Old Testament! Because as you watch my life, and as you hear my teaching, you're going to see the true meaning of these Scriptures that you've been reading all your lives.'' And then he takes six examples from their Scriptures, and for each one he says, ''You've heard that it was said...but I tell you.'' So he never changes the Old Testament; he interprets it rightly. He takes us behind the letter of the law, and shows us the heart of the law.
So today, we come to the final two examples, which are both about love. We talked last week about Super Bowl commercials, and how they're really not about the product, right? They're really offering a certain vision of life. And I don't know if you caught this, but there was a commercial from New York Life, the insurance company. And it talked about the four different words that the ancient Greeks had for love. Did you see this? So they talked about the words for friendship love and family love and romantic love. But then it said this: ''The fourth kind of love is different. It's the most admirable. It's called agape. Love as an action. It takes courage. Sacrifice. Strength.'' I have no idea what it has to do with insurance, but it was a breathtaking commercial. Because agape love is a breathtaking thing.
So in this part of the sermon, Jesus gives us a vision of love. If we choose him as our King, and we walk in his kingdom, here's how our lives can be transformed by love. Matthew chapter five, beginning i ...
