We are taking this winter to walk through Jesus' most famous sermon, the Sermon on the Mount. And we've been saying every week that it's not a list of rules to follow; Jesus is presenting a vision of a certain kind of life. Here's what your life can look like when you're walking in my kingdom, following me as your king. And it's an amazing vision of life.

So he starts out with the Beatitudes: Blessed are the poor in spirit. Blessed are those who mourn. So right from the beginning, you start to realize that the life Jesus offers is very countercultural. It's different from how we normally think of success. Then he clarifies how this all relates to the Jewish Scriptures. He says, ''I didn't come to abolish them; I came to fulfill them.'' And he demonstrates that by taking six Old Testament examples, and for each one he says, ''You have heard that it was said...but I tell you.'' Here's what the Scriptures have been trying to tell you about murder and lust and anger and love. So for this crowd of people, sitting on this mountainside listening to Jesus teach, it was like the lights were coming on, and for the first time they were understanding the Scriptures they had heard all their lives.

And that brings us to Matthew chapter six. One of the things that makes the teaching of Jesus so powerful is that he understood the human heart like no one else. He had this uncanny ability to see past people's actions and words, and actually discern what was motivating those actions and words. So here's the scary thing: we can go through life doing ''good things''- serving God, helping people-all that good stuff. But Jesus says it's possible to do all that stuff with a very dark motive. Hmm. So Jesus says, ''In my kingdom, it's not just about what you do; it's very much about why you do it.''
