I love to watch those old reruns of the show The Office. Do we have any Office fans in the house? In one of the best episodes, Michael is driving with the GPS. He's got Dwight in the front seat, and they're going on a business trip. The GPS says turn right. Michael turns right, and Dwight says, ''You're going to drive us into the lake.'' Michael says, ''But the GPS says turn right,'' and he drives right into the lake. The car is immediately submerged. Wow! I'm one of the few people in the world who still gets lost with a GPS. I totally relate to that experience.
In life, we need a GPS that works. The reason a lot of people are lost morally, and ethically, and spiritually is because they don't have direction for where they are trying to go. God is our GPS. He gives us our direction, and He is always right.
There are at least four ways people make key decisions: survey, tradition, reason and feelings. I want to highlight each one, because I think we all struggle with them. We have questions like, how can I be a good mom? How can I raise my kids? How can I know what is right and wrong? How can I do what is ethical? Do all religions teach the same thing? What is the definition of marriage, and who should be married? What should I do to help the poor?
Survey. We have no end of questions, and if we don't have a GPS guiding us, many times we will miss the opportunities God has put before us. Often people make decisions by the survey approach-it's like a Gallup Poll. I'm trying to make this decision, and I think my neighbor would do this, or I think the guys at the office would say I should do it that way. Maybe we look at the news, or the culture, or what popular opinion says. The truth is, if we make our most important decisions based only on the survey approach, we will miss God's purpose for us, because the majority is not always right.
