Luke 5:33 - 6:11
Sam Stone was the editor at the Christian Standard in Cincinnati, OH and he also taught a couple of courses at the Cincinnati Bible Seminary. I ran into him at a church convention and in the course of our conversation, he told me about speaking to a men's retreat in Virginia years ago. In his introduction, Sam stated, ''Don't forget guys, we aren't the only Christians; we are Christians only.''
An elderly man stood up to protest and shook his fist at Sam. He slammed his Bible on his chair! Then he pointed his long, bony index finger at Sam and said, ''That's not true! And you're the biggest liar who's ever been invited to speak at our retreat!''
Facing eight-hundred men, Sam wondered what he should do. Was this a practical joke? Did he say something wrong? If you were in Sam's shoes, what would you have done? How would you have responded?
For the last six weeks we've been talking about the Perfect Jesus. Don Lemon (CNN) said, ''Jesus did not live a perfect life on earth.'' But the Bible says that, ''Jesus was led into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan.'' And although Jesus had to endure those temptations, he also rebuked Satan! And I'll go ahead and play devil's advocate: Our world is filled with spineless preachers! We avoid controversial ...
