Habakkuk 1:12-17
There are times when what God allows doesn't make sense to us. - Why does a young person get cancer and die? - Why is an innocent person shot and killed? - Why does an evil person live a successful life? - Why does a godly person suffer throughout their life?
Isaiah 40:13 NIV - Who has understood the mind of the Lord? We do not understand why God does what he does because he knows the end from the beginning and controls all things by his almighty power. In the context Isaiah is talking about creation.
The principle is that we do not always understand why God allows certain things to happen in our lives. Faith is trusting that God is in control and working out his plan.
Background As far as Habakkuk was concerned the answer God gave him was not really an answer at all. God's answer that the Babylonians would overrun the nation of Judah (:5-11) created in his mind a new problem: How could God use a wicked nation to punish his own people? The thought seemed to go against the very nature of God who is holy and therefore against evil.
HOLY GOD :12-13 Habakkuk puts his statement in the form of a question which in Hebrew is to make an emphatic statement that something is true.
In his doubt about what God is going to do he focuses on the character of God, not his feelings. We often go with our feelings instead of believing the truth written in God's Word which then causes us to doubt the sovereignty of God in a crisis we face.
He makes three statements about the character of God. He is eternal, holy and unchanging. That is why he will trust God even though he does not understand what God is going to do. 1. Eternal - God does not change over time because he is the same yesterday, today and forever. That means that his character does not change - he is always faithful, loving, just and holy.
