Keep it Real (4 of 4)
Series: Real Talk
Ryan Heller
John 9
I'm convinced that the hardest person to reach with the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ is not the atheist. It's the person who feels like they have life figured out perfectly. It's the ones who feel they have all the boxes checked. Like they have all the answers and can do it all on their own. They don't need the Lord. Unfortunately, we can slip into it sometimes, even if we say we believe in God. It's easy to do that.
In today's story, the person Jesus reaches out to is a man who's completely desperate. In fact, Jesus' most profound ministry was to people who were the down-and-outers. Most of His time was spent with people who were on the fringe. Some were the sick. Some were shady, of questionable character. They were the people who had the biggest problems. For whatever reason, Jesus spent more time with those people than He did with all the religious establishment.
I think the reason Jesus talked to the Jewish religious leaders-the Pharisees and the Sadducees-is they were always bugging Him, always trying to disprove and belittle Him. Jesus spent some time with them because they were always up in His business. But I think if Jesus would have had His way, He would have spent all His time with the people we're going to see this morning.
A couple of weeks ago, we looked at a man who had a spiritual problem. His name was Nicodemus. He came to Jesus by night, asking what he had to do to be born again. Another week we talked about a man who had been ill for many years at the Pool of Bethesda, and Jesus healed him. And we studied a woman caught in adultery, completely humiliated, completely ashamed of what had transpired. There she was before Jesus, and Jesus said, ''Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more.''
Jesus had these intimate, deep conversations. That's why we are calling this series Real Talk, because Jesus said some things that are profound, and inspiring, and hopefu ...
