Just Chillin' (1 of 2)
Series: Just Chill
Ryan Heller
Psalm 46
I'm so excited this morning. We're kicking off the new series called Just Chill. I believe this is important for us to talk about today, because everywhere we turn we see the pressures of life. It's difficult to stay calm when the pressure is on, isn't it? We're going to be talking this week and next about how we can stay calm when the pressure is on.
Maybe you're facing unexpected debt. You never anticipated you would have this financial curveball thrown your way, but now all of a sudden you find yourself overwhelmed with financial burdens. Maybe others of us are married to a spouse who is not a follower of Jesus, and you are, and you've been praying for them. You've been doing everything you can to help them discover what it means to be a follower of Jesus, but it doesn't seem to be going quite as quickly as you anticipated.
Some of us are parents. You know, I believe all kids are special needs kids, because all kids have special needs. But some kids require a little more patience and more time, a little more energy and more direction-a little of whatever you may call it. Sometimes we feel the pressure in that arena, as well, don't we? You might be facing physical challenges or illnesses, or maybe you have a family member who has health issues.
How do we stay calm when the pressure is on? I want you to open your Bible to the 46th chapter of the book of Psalms. Psalm 46 is a powerful passage that begins to unlock how we can stay calm in the midst of life's greatest struggles. Verse one says, ''God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.'' The entire Psalm is about staying calm when the pressure is on.
I love this idea of a refuge. The Bible says God is our refuge. We don't really understand the concept of a refuge so much today, in 21st-century North America, but if you had lived in the ancient world you would have understood that one of the most important a ...
