We're continuing our series Good Vibes that we kicked off a few weeks ago. Today I want to talk to you about taking the positive plunge in your life. We use the phrase ''take the plunge'' in a lot of different arenas when we choose to make a big decision. Some of us take the plunge when we get married, right? You're kind of stepping off the cliff. It's a big commitment. We take the plunge when we decide we're going to go on that diet and lose some weight. Sometimes we take the plunge when we want to commit ourselves to start a new business endeavor. We take the plunge. It implies stepping off, a commitment. If you've ever jumped off a cliff, or off the high diving board, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
As a kid I loved to jump off the high dive. We used to do high-dive belly-flop contests; ohhh, that's painful. Actually, I let my friends do it. I just observed. It's politically incorrect to have high diving boards now. I can imagine the belly-flop contest, with a bunch of lawsuits and people all uptight, lawyers crawling all over the place. But back in the day, it was okay to smash your brains against the water. And it was good, taking the plunge.
The Bible talks about taking a spiritual plunge. When we follow Christ we take a plunge. Today I want to look at Scripture that outlines what it means to take the plunge spiritually in Christ. In Acts 16 we find an unusual story, of Paul and Silas. Paul is the apostle, the man who wrote much of the New Testament. He's a great missionary, a great preacher, and a great evangelist. He's leading people to Christ in the city of Philippi, which is in modern-day Greece. He's there with his sidekick Silas, and they're doing all kinds of excellent ministry. There's also this strange girl who's following them around, mocking the apostle. She's been doing it for several days, and Paul's thinking, ''I'm tired of this creepy woman, this wei ...
