God has a destination for your life, and God has a destination for Edge Church. We've been looking at this tremendous story of how God took a shepherd boy named David, a nobody, the youngest of all his brothers, and made him the king and the most powerful man in the world. It's a compelling story, and we've been on an exciting spiritual journey for the past few weeks.
When I was thinking about destinations, I was reminded of a trip to Europe I took several years ago. Gena and I were invited to do some teaching and speaking in a church in Eastern Europe, and we had a layover in Amsterdam. We spent several days in that ancient city. What a way to spend a few days. They say Amsterdam has more museums than any other city in the world. It's incredible. We saw the house of Rembrandt, the Van Gogh Museum, and so many cool places.
One of my favorites was the ''Old Church.'' The Old Church is in the historic district; it's one of the most beautiful cathedrals in all of Europe. We're talking 36,000 square feet of worship space, with massive arches, and stained glass windows, and paintings on the ceilings that are breathtaking. It's an unbelievable building.
One day we went there for a tour. I was impressed by the rich history of this magnificent and inspiring structure. Then I began to inquire about the congregation. I found out that, even though this cathedral had once been one of the most influential churches in the Netherlands-one of the most influential in all of Europe-today only a few handfuls of senior adults gather there for worship. And their number is dwindling. For six and a half days a week it's a museum.
It's a church that has no impact on the community. No power. No vision. It's a church that is nothing more than a structure. And I thought, how sad is that? That there could be such a beautiful building, yet the impact of the church could be so impotent. In spi ...
