James 5:13-18
This morning I want to talk to you about the power of prayer. I was first acquainted with the power of prayer when I was a twelve-year-old boy. I went to the dentist for a routine X-ray. I had big buck teeth back in the day. That evening the dentist called and said, ''You need to come back to the office because the X-rays are messed up.'' We lived across town, and my mom was really irritated. It was 6:30 or 7:00 at night, and she asked, ''Why are we doing this?''
When we were there, they said, ''We didn't want you to worry or panic while you were driving, but there's a huge growth in Ryan's chin.'' They put the picture of the X-ray up, and I had a hole-a big hole-right here in my chin. He said, ''This is not good. You need to go see an oral surgeon immediately.''
We booked an appointment. The doctor said, ''This could be very serious. Obviously, having a growth so close to your brain is not ideal.'' It was a very scary time.
We went in for surgery as soon as we could, and I'll never forget that some of the leaders of our church came and lay their hands on me and prayed for me, and prayed for the surgery and for my health and well-being. So, I began to experience God in a new way. After the surgery was completed, the doctor came to me and told me, ''Ryan the tumor was benign. We were able to get it all out.'' My chin actually grew back together where the bone had eaten away. At the early service somebody asked me, ''Did you ever play football again?'' Yes, praise God, I did.
I'll tell you, God has a great plan for your life through the power of prayer. I don't know what you're going through today, but I believe God wants to do something great in your life. Part of that something begins in the place of prayer. Most people believe prayer is a good thing. A lot of people practice prayer, but very few people feel like they really pray and connect to God.
