It's not often I feel compelled to alter my sermon schedule, but after these past few months of craziness as I've watched the news, surfed the web, engaged in social media, and ventured into society - I believe the time has come for me to offer our church family in what I hope will be a word of encouragement to all of us to remind us of our calling as Christian.
Let me set the stage - a few weeks ago, I was w/ Cam at a baseball event in FL where I was walking around watching some of the other games. At one point, I began speaking w/ a parent from another team who after learning I was a pastor, made a point to tell me their team was a Christian team and they prayed and had a Bible study before games. Well... that was good until something didn't go their way in the game - and suddenly they all acted anything but Christian.
A few days later, I found myself in a conversation w/ a friend whose faith was being manipulated by their biases/politics instead of their faith influencing their biases/politics - to the point that their solutions to our cultural challenges reflected anything but Jesus.
Then there was my golf cart incident. I was driving w/ Colin - crossing the parkway, when a woman coming the other direction felt it was her duty to comment on my driving decisions - let's just say my response was less than Jesus. After sharing an unfortunate word of encouragement w/ her, I fumed for 20 min. until the H.S. finally poked me in my conscience to say - that's the way to win friends and influence people for Jesus!
Then there was a recent Barna report that shared 32% of people who regularly attended church prior to Covid-19 have neither attended church since church went online nor do they intend to return to church once everything has subsided.
All this to say, while we're not perfect, maybe we have a misunderstanding of what it means to be Christian. ...
