Luke 4:32 - 5:11
After my freshman year of college I was one of thirteen persons who traveled to Australia to preach for the summer. When we landed in Sydney we were detained in customs. For about a half hour we all wondered why.
Back in those days guys wore ties and slacks on a plane so I knew we didn't look like drugs dealers. And it's hard to think they thought we were diamond thieves. Maybe we were wanted by the FBI? Just when our imaginations were running wild we learned that our health cards were one injection shy of being able to enter their country. As soon as the necessary injections were administered, we had the credentials to enter Australia.
Webster defines the word ''credentials'' like this: ''A picture I.D. flashed to gain access. Our credentials, our ''cred,'' tells others who we are. They open doors, illicit handshakes, and they pave the way for our entrance. The best credentials, however, are results, not references.
One attractive quality about Jesus we can trust are his creds. He was known as Joseph's son; but we know him as the, ''Only begotten Son of God!'' And his accomplishments during his earthly ministry substantiated his claim. Jesus fulfilled more than three-hundred prophecies, he walked on water, he calmed a raging storm, he raised the dead, and he died on the cross to rise again.
Don Lemon (CNN News) said that when Jesus lived on the earth he ''... did not live a perfect life.'' That's why we're taking a fresh look at the perfection of Jesus. This morning, let's highlight the credentials that endeared him to his audience. Hopefully in the process, we will become enamored all over again with the perfect Jesus.
Notice first that he spoke with authority. Luke 4:
31 Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath began to teach the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching, because his message had authority.
