John 17:6-10

Introduction

You've heard the statement: He thinks he is God's gift to mankind. It is used to describe a conceited person. But our passage actually encourages us to think of ourselves as God's gifts, not to the world but to Jesus. Let's listen in on Jesus praying for his disciples.

Text

Typically, I like to go down a passage verse by verse. But to more clearly understand what Jesus is saying in his prayer, it may be better to pull out of the prayer the major points of what he has to say. And we can categorize according to the following three ways: what the Father has done; what Jesus has done; and what the disciples have done.

Verse 9: those whom you have given me, for they are yours.

He gives to Jesus the words for him to convey to the disciples:

Verse 8: For I have given them the words that you gave me.

He gives to Jesus everything that Jesus has:

So the Father gives to Jesus his disciples, his words to teach; indeed, he gives to Jesus everything that Jesus possesses.

And he gives Jesus himself:

Verse 8: I came from you... you sent me.

Jesus is God's gift to the disciples.

What Jesus Has Done

Let's now turn to what Jesus has done. He specifies three things.

Verse 6: I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me

The name of God is a phr ...
