Matthew 28:18-20
Then: Jesus commands his Church to go and make disciples. Now: Every Church is to be a disciplemaking fellowship of believers. Question'' What is our purpose?
INTRODUCTION: During World War II, the Nazis set up a camp factory in Hungary where prisoners were made to labor amid barbarous conditions. One day the prisoners were ordered to move a huge pile of garbage from one end of the camp to another. The next day, they were ordered to move the pile back to its original location. No reason was given, they were just told to do it. So began a pattern. Day after day the prisoners hauled the same mountain of garbage from one end of the camp to another. The impact on the prisoners of that mindless, meaningless labor and existence begin to come to the surface. One day and elderly prisoner began sobbing and had to be lead away. This effect continued until one man in the camp broke away and began running toward the electrified fence. He was told to stop or he would be electrified. He didn't care. He flung himself on the fence and died in a blinding flash. In the days that followed dozens of prisoners went insane. The captors didn't care, for what the prisoners didn't know was that they were part of an experiment in mental health. What would happen to people who were subjected to meaningless activity. They wanted to see what a life would become without a sense of purpose. They concluded the result was insanity and suicide. Purpose is decisive to life. Especially to the Church, for the church to live and grow we must understand what our purpose is. Yet a lot of churches are slowly dying because they have lost sight of their purpose.
